Cabin Rentals Near West Yellowstone

Cross the Idaho line 15 minutes south of West Yellowstone and you're in the quiet, bigger, more affordable side of the same trip. Grandview's six cabins sit here.

The town of West Yellowstone, Montana sits directly at Yellowstone's busiest gate but has almost no large-cabin inventory and premium rates for what does exist. Fifteen minutes south, across the Idaho line into Island Park, the cabin picture changes: bigger properties, lower rates, quieter roads, same drive to the same gate. Grandview manages six cabins here.

The Montana vs Idaho tradeoff

Why most West Yellowstone visitors end up in Idaho.

West Yellowstone, Montana is a working gateway town of about 1,300 people. During peak summer it hosts tens of thousands of park visitors a week. Hotel rooms fill months in advance and rental rates run high. What's harder to spot is that most rentals inside the West Yellowstone city limits are small — one- to three-bedroom cabins, often shared driveways, tight lot lines. That's fine for two people. It doesn't work for a family of eight or a group of twelve.

Fifteen minutes south of the West Yellowstone gate, you cross the Idaho state line into Island Park. Same drive to the same park entrance. Different real estate market. Cabin lots are 5 to 40 acres instead of quarter-acre. Owners built for the space, not the density. Almost every property has its own lake, river, or dome view without a neighboring cabin in the frame.

Grandview's six cabins are all here. The closest is 15 minutes from the West Yellowstone gate; the furthest is about an hour. In practical terms, most guests spend one full day inside the park and the rest of the week using the cabin as the destination.

What you actually do in West Yellowstone the town

Yes, you still spend time in town.

Even with the cabin as the base, guests end up in West Yellowstone the town on most trips. It's the closest full-service commercial center to the west gate: the IMAX theater, the Grizzly & Wolf Discovery Center, the Yellowstone Historic Center Museum, and most park-focused restaurants sit within a five-block downtown. The Union Pacific Dining Lodge and Wild West Pizzeria & Saloon are the two most-visited spots on rainy days.

Gas up in town on your way to the gate — it's cheaper than the last Idaho station at Macks Inn by about 20 cents per gallon during peak season. If you didn't stock the fridge at Rexburg, the grocery in West Yellowstone (Food Roundup) is the fallback but expect vacation pricing.

In winter, West Yellowstone becomes the snowmobile capital: it's the eastern end of the biggest groomed snowmobile trail network in the lower 48. Most of Grandview's cabins are inside that same network on the Idaho side, so you sled straight from the cabin's front door.

FAQ

West Yellowstone cabin trip questions.

  • Is it worth staying in Idaho if West Yellowstone the town is what we want to visit?

Yes, for most travelers. West Yellowstone doesn't have the cabin inventory or the space — you're paying more for smaller places closer to the gate. Fifteen minutes south into Island Park gives you real cabin lots at rates 20 to 40 percent lower.

  • Do we cross state lines every day?

Yes, but only to drive the last 15 to 55 minutes to the park gate. Idaho and Montana are on the same time zone in this area during summer (both Mountain), so nothing about scheduling changes. Cell service is spotty for the first mile past the state line — download offline Google Maps before you leave the cabin.

  • Where do we buy groceries?

Best options in order: Broulim's or Macey's in Rexburg (45 min south of Island Park) for a full-week haul, the Chevron in Macks Inn or the store in Last Chance for coffee, snacks, and forgotten items, or Food Roundup in West Yellowstone as the near-park fallback. Skip West Yellowstone for anything you can plan ahead.

  • What's the drive time from Bozeman airport to Grandview cabins?

Bozeman International (BZN) to Island Park is about 2.5 hours via US-191. Most groups fly into Idaho Falls (IDA) instead — 90 minutes to the cabins on I-15 south. IDA has fewer daily flights but easier access.

  • Are the Idaho cabins snowmobile-accessible from West Yellowstone?

Yes for most of the cabins in winter. The connecting trail system runs west from the West Yellowstone hub straight into Island Park's Two Top and Rea trail networks. Cutthroat Landing, Beautiful Views, Riverfront, and Trails End all sit on or within a mile of the network. See our Snowmobiling Island Park guide for the trail map.

  • Do any cabins have views comparable to a Big Sky or West Yellowstone lodge?

Riverfront Wildlife Lodge sits directly on the Henry's Fork with the river out the back door; Beautiful Views and Cutthroat both sit on Henry's Lake. Teton View Retreat has the biggest view of the collection — the Teton range fills the front window at sunrise. On views, Idaho beats West Yellowstone.
